What Is a Career Coach and What Do They Do?

What does a career coach do, how does it differ from consulting and mentoring, and why does ICF accreditation matter? Everything you've wanted to know about career coaching.

What is a career coach?

A career coach is not an expert who tells you what to do. A career coach is a professional partner who, by asking the right questions, helps you arrive at your own answers, clarifies your goals, and works alongside you to design the path toward them.

In the coaching relationship, you are the expert on your own life. The coach's expertise lies in the process itself: listening, asking powerful questions, creating awareness, and making the action plan sustainable.

What does a career coach do?

Career coaching is typically used in situations such as:

  • **Career transition:** Gaining clarity to decide when changing industries, roles, or ways of working.
  • **The first step into leadership:** Helping professionals who are managing a team for the first time step into their new identity.
  • **A feeling of uncertainty or being stuck:** Finding direction during periods when "everything seems fine, but something is missing."
  • **Visibility and self-presentation:** Building a consistent story across your resume, LinkedIn, and interviews.
  • **Burnout and boundary-setting:** Designing a sustainable pace of work.

How does career coaching differ from consulting and mentoring?

  • **Consulting** analyzes your problem and proposes a solution.
  • **Mentoring** is when someone experienced shares what they've learned from their own path.
  • **Coaching** works on the assumption that the answer lies within you; the coach manages the process, while you determine the content.

In practice, these three can complement one another. For example, if you're working with a coach who has an HR background, you may — when you ask for it — step outside the coaching framework and receive mentoring support as well, as long as this distinction is discussed transparently.

Why does ICF accreditation matter?

Coaching is not a legally protected professional title in Türkiye. This is why accreditation is what defines the quality standard. A credential such as ICF (International Coaching Federation) ACC means a certain number of training hours, supervised coaching experience, mentor coaching, and adherence to a code of ethics.

When choosing a career coach, you might ask: Which accreditation do they hold? How many hours of coaching experience do they have? How do they handle confidentiality and ethical principles? Do they offer a free introductory session?

How does a career coaching process unfold?

1. **Free introductory session:** A conversation where we clarify your needs and expectations and assess mutual fit. 2. **Goal setting:** Making concrete what will have changed by the end of the process. 3. **Sessions:** Typically 50 minutes, held every 2–4 weeks. 4. **Action and follow-up:** Small, actionable steps at the end of each session. 5. **Evaluation:** Reviewing the gains achieved at the end of the process.

The number of sessions needed depends on the goal: a focused decision might only require a 4-session sprint, while a lasting change at the behavioral level is better suited to an 8-session process.

Where should you start?

The fastest way to find out whether career coaching is right for you is to schedule an introductory session. You can request a free introductory session through the website, or, if you prefer, start by completing the personal awareness assessment to clarify what you'd like to focus on.
