From Corporate Life to Entrepreneurship: Escape or Calling?
Thinking about starting your own business? The critical question to ask before you decide, and the steps to pay attention to.
Before you decide to leave your company and start your own business, let us talk for a moment. You want to leave corporate life and build something of your own. That is a brave thought, and even thinking about it takes courage.
First, Get Clear on This: Escape or Calling?
I have seen employees make the entrepreneurship decision from two very different places: some left for freedom, to realise their own potential; others left to escape the pressure of their job. These two point to very different journeys.
Remember, what you run from usually follows you; it can show up in your new work too. If you are considering entrepreneurship in order to escape your current job, you risk recreating the same dynamics in your own company.
How Should You Prepare as an Entrepreneur?
Plan your business strategically first, then develop yourself as an operator in that direction. A few headlines:
- See the difficulties as clearly as you see the opportunities.
- As much as you seek support, allow people to criticise you; stay open to feedback.
- Take inspiration from other entrepreneurs.
You do not have to quit entirely, either. You can run both for a while and set yourself free once you are ready. This transition does not have to be a single leap.
Move Because of an Opportunity, Not to Escape
Act because you see an opportunity, not because you want to run. This distinction determines how sustainable and healthy your decision will be. Ask yourself: Am I running away from something, or running towards something?
Many people want to leave corporate life and become entrepreneurs. If you are at the start of that road, a coaching process can support you both in strategic planning and in making sense of your own motivation.
