Managing Difficult Conversations in the Workplace
How can we make conversations about performance, boundaries, and expectations less intimidating?
We put off certain conversations. For weeks, sometimes months. The timing never feels right, the words never line up, and the courage never feels like enough.
And the longer that conversation is postponed, the bigger it grows inside us — far beyond its actual size.
It's not the conversation that's hard, it's the expectation
What usually makes things hard for us isn't the conversation itself, but the outcome we expect from it. We imagine in advance how the other person will react, how the relationship will change, and whether things can ever go back to the way they were — and that imagined scenario weighs far more heavily than the actual conversation.
Ask yourself: What's the real reason I'm postponing this conversation — that I can't find the right words to say, or that I'm afraid of the outcome?
These are two very different things, and they require very different responses.
Clarity is not the same as harshness
One reason we avoid difficult conversations is that we confuse clarity with harshness. But being clear doesn't mean being unkind. Delivering performance feedback, setting a boundary, or clearly stating an expectation — all of these can be done with respect, even with kindness.
What should actually be avoided is a lack of clarity — because ambiguity exhausts both you and the other person for far longer and far more deeply.
Preparing is not the same as rehearsing
One final distinction: preparing for a difficult conversation isn't about replaying it over and over in your head. Real preparation means clarifying not what you want to say, but why you want to say it. Once your intent is clear, the words tend to come on their own.
Difficult conversations are, more often than not, conversations that truly build relationships rather than break them. Sometimes finding this clarity on your own can be hard — and that's not something you have to do alone.
