Wanting a Promotion Is Not Enough: Are You Really Ready?
Asking for a promotion is easy; being ready is hard. The questions to ask before a promotion and how to build visibility in your career.
People usually want a promotion for three reasons: to feel they are growing at regular intervals, to see that they are appreciated, and of course to earn more. Some ask "when will I be promoted?" from their very first day at work. But what if a promotion were not a goal but a result?
What Does Being Promoted Actually Mean?
A promotion means more responsibility, more mature thinking, harder relationships and conflict management. It means being able to deliver results, to take risks, and beyond a certain point to lead people rather than tasks. That is why asking for a promotion is easy, but being ready is hard.
I have seen many people struggle shortly after being promoted. The reason was rarely a lack of talent; they had made an unprepared transition. Without leaving your current role, can you rehearse the new one in your mind? When you think about the new responsibility, is excitement or anxiety stronger? Feeling both is natural, but knowing which one dominates matters.
Promotion Opportunities Do Not Always Appear
Opportunities do not appear whenever we want them. So how do you move forward? A few suggestions:
- Set your goals clearly.
- Create challenges and manage them successfully.
- Reach the result, or learn from your mistakes.
In other words, write your career stories. How you thought and behaved in specific situations will serve you later. These stories become your strongest evidence in both interviews and promotion conversations.
The Goal Should Be Growth, Not the Title
Let your goal be to grow, to develop others and to be visible — and let the promotion be the natural result. When you do that, your future does not depend on luck when an opportunity appears. You are already ready, already visible, and you already have your stories.
The Question to Ask Yourself
You want a promotion. But what is the real reason? Do you want a higher salary, or are you genuinely ready for a bigger role? These are not the same thing: one is a need, the other is a state of readiness.
You do not have to build this clarity alone. A coaching process can accompany you in clarifying what you truly want and how ready you are for it. Seen this way, what could you do differently today?
